As members of an industry where only 2% of licensed architects are Black, we must take action. We’re donating to NOMA, The National Organization of Minority Architects and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. We must foster equity in an industry ripe with disparity. https://t.co/PWBRLkEpqO

These past weeks we’ve taken a step back. We’ve been reflecting on past actions, listening to powerful voices in our community, and re-learning our history. Having uncomfortable conversations with ourselves and with each other is only the first step and by no means the last. ⠀ ⠀ As members of an industry where only 2% of licensed architects are Black, we must take action. Architecture plays a role in shaping our society and must be a reflection of its immense diversity. We pledge to continue to show up for you; walking in protests, actively educating ourselves, pausing our own voices to listen to yours. We must foster equity in an industry ripe with disparity. We feel it is incumbent upon us to use our resources to take immediate action to support organizations working towards change. We’re donating to NOMA, The National Organization of Minority Architects, an organization working to champion justice and equity in communities of color and the design professions. We’re also donating to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, an organization tirelessly fighting for racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and public education. ⠀ ⠀ While this contribution is a start, we know it is not enough. We’re currently crafting a long-term strategy to upend racial inequality, hold ourselves accountable for the role we play, and foster a more diverse and inclusive design community. ⠀ ⠀ We have work to do.

The Talisman is the first residential apartment addition to Redmond Town Center in Redmond Washington. The design weaves housing, parking and 9400 SF of retail mix-use into an existing parking lot. With context of lower retail and parking structures, we worked within city and Redmond Town center guidelines to break down the massing of the building through a (sub)urban kit of parts. By associating material and massing to anchors, bays, cores and ribbon, an otherwise massive block breaks down into a series of smaller elements.⠀ ⠀ Client: Lowe Enterprises⠀ Contractor: Compass Construction⠀ ⠀ @talismanapts⠀ @compassgc⠀ Photos: @lokesh.singh.masania (drone photos)⠀ Photos: @robrdeane – other photos⠀ @redmondtowncenter⠀ #multifamily #seattlearchitecture

One of our current projects, Fireside, is situated within the vibrant Roosevelt neighborhood here in Seattle. The proposed 6 story building incorporates a gridded facade, referential of the neighborhood context, and a tapered form. Encapsulated within a super frame, the facade angles back, stepping along the northern face creating depth and shadow at the street front. The 102 unit project includes a large rooftop amenity space, biorention planters, private patios, and improved landscaping throughout the site. ⠀ ⠀ Team:⠀ @tmarchitectseattle⠀ @weismandesigngroup⠀ Renderings @notionworkshop

Along with most of you, we’ve been social distancing. For us that means working from home and moving most of our meetings to videoconference. We quickly realized that with this shift in how we work, it’s important to take time to reach out to one another, to check in on our coworkers and their families as best we can. We are continuing to work, and work through this together.
